One morning in 2002, my Advanced Bionics cochlear implant and sound processor were activated. That afternoon, I held telephone conversations with three members of my family and wept with joy.

With my cochlear implant from Advanced Bionics, almost overnight, my world expanded from the dimensions of my small apartment to the immense proportions of the world.

Whether in California or in China, in Brazil or in Singapore, the Clipper Yacht Race presents a

unique opportunity to raise global awareness of hearing disabilities and how technology can be
used to overcome them with dramatic,
life-affirming consequences.
In 2003, I began traveling again and have since

traveled independently throughout Europe and Asia.
As my confidence grew thanks to my AB cochlear implant, I undertook still greater personal challenges.
I became a lawyer who no longer dreaded court appearances. I became a woman with a Saturday
night date. I became a sailor and most recently, a sailor with a dream to circumnavigate the globe on the
Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
I chose Advanced Bionics because they offered

better options for the future. I likened an AB cochlear implant to a computer with more RAM, hard drive,
and speed. So, even if I'm not using all the device's capabilities now, those features are there to accommodate AB's future developments that will continue to improve my hearing.
